Show Plates vs Road-Legal Plates: What's the Difference?

By RegXperts

When you order custom number plates you'll be asked to choose between road-legal plates and show plates. They can look almost identical โ€” but they're built for very different purposes. Here's how to pick the right one.

Road-legal plates

A road-legal plate is made to meet the UK's plate standard so it can be displayed on a vehicle used on public roads. That means solid black characters, the correct reflective background, the regulation font, and exact sizing and spacing. If you drive your car on the road, this is the plate you need.

Show plates

Show plates are made for display: car shows, exhibitions, photography, private land and off-road vehicles. Because they aren't used on public roads, show plates can feature styling that road-legal plates can't โ€” tinted finishes, two-tone effects, custom spacing and more creative looks. They are not legal for use on a public highway.

Which should you choose?

  • Driving on public roads โ€” choose road-legal plates.
  • Show car, display piece or off-road use โ€” show plates give you more creative freedom.
  • Want the premium look and road legality โ€” a 3D gel or 4D plate in solid black delivers both.

Made to order, either way

Every RegXperts plate is precision-made in-house. In the plate builder you simply select "road legal" or "show plate" and we produce yours to the right specification. If you're unsure which applies to your situation, our team is happy to advise.
