Short Number Plates: Sizing, Legality and When to Choose Them
By RegXperts
Not every vehicle suits a full-length plate. Short number plates are a neat solution where space is tight or where a more compact look simply suits the car. Here's what to know.
What is a short plate?
A short plate displays the same registration as a standard plate, but on a more compact backing. The characters and spacing still meet the rules โ it's the surrounding plate that's trimmed down.
When a short plate makes sense
- Vehicles with a smaller plate recess or mounting area.
- Imports and vehicles originally designed for square-style plates.
- Drivers who simply prefer a tighter, cleaner look.
Sizing and character limits
Because the backing is shorter, the number of characters that fit is limited. Shorter plates suit registrations with fewer characters; longer registrations need more width. When you order, choosing the right size for your registration is the key step.
Are short plates road legal?
A short plate can be road legal as long as the characters, font, sizing and spacing meet the standard. The plate must still display your full registration correctly.
