What You Need to Order Number Plates: ID & Entitlement Explained
By RegXperts
Ordering road-legal number plates in the UK takes a couple of minutes longer than buying an ordinary product โ and that's a good thing. Suppliers are required to confirm who you are and that you're entitled to the registration. Here's what you'll need and why.
Proof of identity
You'll be asked for a document that proves who you are. Acceptable examples typically include a current driving licence, a passport, or an official identity document. It simply needs to clearly show your name.
Proof of entitlement
You'll also need to show you're entitled to display that registration on a vehicle. This is usually a vehicle registration certificate (V5C), a new keeper supplement, a certificate of entitlement, or similar documentation that ties the registration to you.
Why suppliers ask
Registered plate suppliers are required to record these details. It's there to prevent registrations being copied or misused โ a protection for every honest motorist, including you.
