Are 3D and 4D Number Plates Legal in the UK?

By RegXperts

It's the question we're asked more than any other: are 3D gel and 4D number plates actually legal to drive on? The short answer is yes โ€” as long as they're made to the correct standard. The longer answer is worth two minutes of your time before you order.

What the law actually requires

To be road legal in the UK, a number plate has to meet the current British Standard. In practice that means the characters must be solid black, displayed on a reflective background โ€” white at the front, yellow at the rear โ€” in the mandatory typeface, at the correct size and spacing. The plate also has to show your registration exactly as the DVLA issued it.

Where 3D gel plates stand

3D gel plates have a raised, domed resin finish over each character. Because the characters can be produced in a single solid shade of black, a 3D gel plate built to specification is road legal. The raised effect is purely a finish โ€” it doesn't change the colour, size or spacing of the registration.

Where 4D plates stand

4D plates use precision laser-cut acrylic letters fixed to the plate for a crisp, premium look. Made in a single solid black to the correct dimensions, 4D plates are also road legal. It's when finishes stray into two-tone, coloured, tinted or shadow effects that a plate becomes a show plate โ€” great for display, but not for the road.

The simple rule

If the characters are one solid shade of black and the plate meets the standard size, font and spacing, you're good to go. If the plate uses colour, gradients or tinting, treat it as a show plate. When you build your plate with RegXperts you simply choose "road legal" or "show plate" and we make it accordingly.

Regulations are occasionally updated, so it's always worth checking the latest DVLA guidance โ€” or just ask our team, who do this every day.
